Tune Protect and Verdant Solar have teamed up to support Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim & Miskin Sungai Pinang in Klang through a new sustainability programme combining renewable energy, food security and community volunteering.
Called Sun & Roots: Towards A Greener Future, the initiative is also supported by Sunway XFarms and aims to provide practical, long-term benefits to the home, which currently houses 52 children and nine caretakers.
Solar Power Could Save Up to RM7,500 a Year
One of the programme’s biggest contributions is the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems by Verdant Solar across the orphanage’s office and dormitory buildings.
The two systems will have capacities of 6.44 kWp and 9.20 kWp respectively, with estimated electricity savings of around RM6,500 to RM7,500 annually. Installation is expected to be completed in stages, with the system targeted to be fully operational by mid-October 2026.
Beyond reducing electricity costs, the programme also introduces the children to sustainable food production through Sunway XFarms’ Farming Made Fun workshop.
The children took part in hands-on activities including microgreens planting and hydroponic farming, providing an introduction to how food can be grown more sustainably while building awareness around food security.
More than 60 volunteers from Tune Protect, Verdant Solar and Sunway XFarms also participated in the programme, carrying out gotong-royong, landscaping and facility improvement activities around the orphanage.
For Tune Protect, the programme forms part of its wider sustainability and community efforts, including a commitment to contribute 6,000 employee volunteer hours between 2025 and 2027.
By combining lower electricity costs with sustainable food cultivation and improvements to the home’s living spaces, Sun & Roots is designed to leave the orphanage with benefits that continue well beyond the initial volunteering event.
