Malaysian travellers looking to experience more destinations in a single holiday may want to put the Greater Bay Area (GBA) on their travel radar.
The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), Department of Culture and Tourism of Guangdong Province, and Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) recently came together in Kuala Lumpur to showcase how Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macao can be explored as part of one connected multi-destination journey.
Malaysia was selected to host this year’s annual Greater Bay Area tourism promotion event, bringing together local travel agencies, airlines, tourism partners and media to explore new opportunities for Malaysian travellers.
Three destinations in one trip
The Greater Bay Area comprises nine cities in Guangdong Province alongside Hong Kong and Macao, giving travellers access to a wide variety of experiences within one region.
Thanks to infrastructure such as the High-Speed Rail and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, travelling between key destinations has become increasingly convenient, with many journeys taking around an hour.
For Malaysian travellers, this makes it possible to combine several different experiences within the same holiday.
Hong Kong offers everything from its famous skyline and bustling neighbourhoods to world-class dining and natural landscapes. The city has also been expanding its Muslim-friendly tourism offerings, including more halal-certified and Muslim-owned restaurants, attractions and facilities.
Over in Guangdong, travellers can experience the futuristic cityscape of Shenzhen before discovering Guangzhou’s historical attractions and celebrated Cantonese food scene.
Macao, meanwhile, offers a distinctive blend of Chinese and Portuguese influences, alongside its UNESCO-listed Historic Centre, renowned food culture and integrated resorts.
Together, the three destinations provide an easy way to experience everything from food and culture to technology, shopping and nature within a single trip.
Bringing the flavours of the Greater Bay Area to Kuala Lumpur
Food also played a major role in introducing Malaysians to the region.
Guests at the Kuala Lumpur event were treated to a culinary showcase featuring dishes and drinks representing all three destinations.
Hong Kong’s Bar Leone, which became the first Asian establishment to top The World’s 50 Best Bars list in 2025, served a selection of cocktails and mocktails, while halal-certified Chinese fine-dining restaurant Chinesology Hong Kong presented contemporary Cantonese dishes.
Macao was represented through favourites including Portuguese egg tarts, lychee tea and serradura, while Guangdong’s selection included sesame balls, ma lai go steamed cake and prawn rice rolls.
Making multi-destination travel easier for Malaysians
To encourage more Malaysians to explore the region, HKTB has partnered with AirAsia and seven participating travel agencies to introduce Greater Bay Area travel packages and promotional offers.
The initiative aims to make planning a multi-city holiday more straightforward, allowing travellers to experience the different personalities of Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macao without having to organise each destination as a completely separate trip.
Malaysian creators share their Greater Bay Area experiences
The event also featured Malaysian content creators who recently travelled through the region and shared their experiences with attendees.
Couple creators William Seng and Celine Chan highlighted the GBA as an option for couples interested in combining city exploration, food and cultural experiences.
Meanwhile, Muslim creators Nana Mohd and Ain Ramli shared their experiences travelling across the region, including the growing availability of halal dining and Muslim-friendly facilities.
With convenient transport connecting cities that each offer a distinctly different experience, the Greater Bay Area presents Malaysian travellers with an opportunity to discover several sides of southern China in one holiday — from Hong Kong’s energetic city life and Guangdong’s food and culture to Macao’s unique East-meets-West heritage.
