A few weeks ago, the internet sphere blew up (no pun intended) when a TikTok video of a group of young netizens posted themselves cooking at a local gas station in Genting Highlands went viral.
The videos in question have since been taken down, but here’s the gist of it: The group of friends were seen setting up a makeshift camp at a local Petron and enjoying an array of instant Maggi, sausages, and condiments all of which were cooked on-site.
Then, the uploader took a video of the police arriving with a caption “datang dah” (they’re here) complete with a laughing emoji denoting their amusement when the authorities pulled up. Comments were less than amused, however, and called them out on their irresponsibility and overall potential endangerment to their surroundings.
According to Harian Metro, the four suspects were given a penalty of RM500 each after being charged under Section 336 of the Penal Code for endangering life or personal safety as of 21st May. Failure to do so, according to the court, would have landed them a 3-day sentencing in jail. All suspects paid their fines in the end, pleading for a reduced amount after the prosecutor demanded a maximum penalty, but were reduced to RM500.
