MY Gaya Month ends with a high note, hit sales of over RM500,000

KUALA LUMPUR, 10 NOVEMBER 2022: MY Gaya Month 2022, the second installation of a month-long campaign by Malaysian Bumiputra Designer Association (MBDA) comes to a close today, boasting of a total sales revenue of over RM500,00 that exceeded the initial target of RM300,000.

The month-long initiative aims to promote and support local fashion products in support of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP)’s Kempen Beli Barangan Malaysia that was relaunched in 2009.

Held from 6th October until 10th November 2022 at Fahrenheit88, the MY Gaya Month was divided into 3 parts that comprised a fashion emporium, forum sessions as well as a runway event that showcased the collections of 21 participating local designer brands.

Aligned with its objective to uplift the local fashion scene, this initiative that is helmed by the local designers of MBDA, was highly supported by peers in the industry and well-known key opinion leaders such as Faizal Hamid, Bon Zainal Harun, Dr. Thomas Ong Poh Shing, Emdad, Darren Choy, Amir Kadir and Leslie Variyan.

During the month-long campaign, MY Gaya Month also organised trips for fashion students from several public educational institutions to expose them to the world of fashion. Both the students and the public had the opportunity to learn from esteemed speakers during the forum that was held on 13th October 2022. Some of the topics that were discussed during the forum included ‘Fashion & Technology’, ‘Digitalisation in Fashion’ and ‘Business in Fashion’.

In addition, beginner modelling classes were conducted by industry professionals from ERP Elite Model to provide the interested parties exposure into the modelling world.

As for the runway, there were 6 segments that showed off the revolutionary collections of the 20 local designer brands made for various categories including Activewear, Streetwear, Kids, Couture, Bespoke, Resort Wear, Accessories as well as Batik and Songket.

“With this campaign, we wanted to showcase the numerous collections that our local talents are capable of producing to elevate the Malaysian fashion industry. By doing this, we are able to garner more support for local products, which will end up improving the potential of the local fashion industry,” said the president of MBDA, Rasta Rashid.

She added that the activities throughout the duration of MY Gaya Month managed to generate an impressive total sales value which exceeded the initial KPI target. This demonstrates the public’s great acceptance of local fashion and their support for homegrown artists, paving the future for the local designers.

Meanwhile, Deputy Secretary General of KPDNHEP, YBhg. Datin Roszanina Wahab said, “We are very pleased with the tremendous positive response and support that was garnered during this campaign. KPDNHEP first started the ‘Kempen Beli Barangan Malaysia’ to create awareness on the quality of homegrown brands to compete with international counterparts and increase the sales of local products. Currently, the Malaysian fashion industry alone is expected to reach a total revenue of around US$2.9 billion (RM13.72 billion) in 2022. This is a proud achievement not only for the local fashion industry, but for the country as a whole.”

In conjunction with the closing ceremony, MY Gaya Month 2022, held an award ceremony to acknowledge some of the most notable local designer brands throughout the whole campaign.

  2. Evita Mairesse (Most Promising Designer Award)
  3. Ghadeez KL (Best Runway [Ready-To-Wear] Collection Award)
  4. Amaratpal Donnie – AD (Best Runway [Bespoke] Award)
  5. Kalima Textiles (Highest Booth Sales Award [F88])
  6. Pavilion Group Kuala Lumpur (Special MBDA Award)
  7. Three Little Ahmads (Special MBDA Award)

Additionally, renowned local singer Imran Ajmain also serenaded the guests with a few of his hit songs at the closing ceremony.
