“If you focus on skincare, you won’t really need much makeup” is the old adage – and the older I get, the truer these words are.
The most important thing that my mother has instilled in me for years is the maintenance of healthy skin. Skin, especially your face, is the first change that you notice as you get older – and so it’s imperative that we recognise our skin’s needs and learn to take better care of it.
I’ve gone through a handful of drugstore skincare that claim to hydrate and rejuvenate my skin, but so far many of them have been lacklustre in their delivery. It was until recently that I stumbled upon the Hada Labo Hydrating Lotion and decided to give that a try.
Hada Labo Hydrating Lotion Details:
Capped at roughly RM60 for a 170ml bottle, I’d say it is pretty affordable. Anyway, here are my two cents on the product.
First thing to take note is that the Lotion comes in two consistencies: rich and light. Which you use entirely depends on the type of skin you have.
My skin has always been on the oily side, so I opted for the light lotion which has the consistency of almost like water. For those of you who lean towards the dry side, the rich lotion has a thicker texture – but both share a common trait: they are super absorbent.
What’s unique about the Hydrating Lotion?
The hydrating lotion eliminates the need for other unnecessary skincare products. For example, because of its properties in both repairing skin barrier and boosting the absorption for your next skincare step, the lotion becomes an all-encompassing force that reduces the amount of product you would need to put on your face.
Before, it contained 4 types, but now, with a brand new and improved formula, the lotion contains 5 types of HA (hyaluronic acids); with the added one being the world’s first fermented Hyaluronic Acid. This brand new ingredient is conceptualised to further lock in moisture, store and replenish hydration for soft, smooth and supple skin alongside maintaining balance of both good and bad bacteria on your skin.
The consistency is akin to viscous water, and is free of paraben, colour, fragrance, mineral oil and alcohol. This is exceptionally pleasing to hear for people with skin that tend to be more sensitive to irritants present in other skincare products.
Experience and My 2 Cents:
As per the instructions, I applied the lotion to a freshly-cleansed face and could immediately feel the product seeping in and hydrating my skin. This is due to the presence of high-penetrating amino acids, which are these fine molecules that penetrate the skin effectively to provide that good hydration and prepare for your next skincare product.
It was surprising, but there was no sticky or slippery residue. I then followed that up with my favourite moisturiser and did my makeup as normal.
According to the description, it was supposed to give me a longer lasting and non-cakey makeup feel, certainly something I was looking for considering I travel for work quite a bit and hate the feeling of cakey and patchy makeup.

Everyday we’re all exposed to pollution. Now that we’re required to be out in public again, the outside air remains unforgiving and can leave our skin feeling clogged and dry but at the end of the day, I pleasantly found that despite the toils and constant running about, my skin didn’t feel sticky or dirty, and my makeup was still intact nicely.
This is because of the presence of ceramide that forms a layer of moisture retaining barrier to protect the skin from moisture loss. In other words, your skin doesn’t feel dry or damaged from exposure to pollution and the environment because there is a barrier that locks in all the hydrating properties of the lotion in your skin.
The only gripe I have about the product is that it’s not travel-friendly, because it only comes in one 170ml size, but it’s a small price to pay for how effectively it’s worked. That, and the fact that its effects have lasted for a good part of the day, I’d say it doesn’t really matter as much.
Verdict: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Worth it. For its mid-range price as a drugstore product, the Hada Labo Hydrating Lotion is a godsend, especially if you’re looking to boost moisture on your skin. Be wary of your skin type and choose the rich or light depending on how your skin behaves. Other than that, it’s an amazing product that feels cool and non-sticky and absorbs comfortably on your face. I’ve actually found a product that works well for my skin and doesn’t leave me frustrated with its condition.
