Before they hit you, they hit near you.
So recently, Netflix has been coming with tons of pretty good shows that are interesting and worth binging for. One that caught our attention was the Netflix Original series ‘Maid’.
Maid is based on Stephani Land’s memoir, Maid: Hark Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive. Molly Smith Metzler directed this piece, which also included John Wells, Nzingha Stewart, Lila Neugebauer, Helen Shaver, and Quyen “Q” Tran as directors.
It depicts the story of Alex (Margaret Qualley) and her daughter Maddy on their trip (Rylea Nevaeh Whittet). Alex is a well-educated young lady who dreams of becoming a writer — then, she got pregnant.
Spoiler alert. To those who have yet to watch the show, we reckon you to not scroll any further. Don’t tell us we didn’t warn you.
The mother (Alex) pulls her 3-year-old daughter (Maddy) out of the house to seek safety in the middle of the night at the start of the show.
Sean, Alex’s partner, and verbally and emotionally abuses her. She also has an estranged father who has been gone from his daughter since she was a child, as well as an undiagnosed bipolar mother who’s always missing in action, both of whom put a strain on her.
Imagine sleeping with her child at a ferry dock because they have nowhere else to go; Alex eventually finds herself in a domestic violence shelter.
At the end of the day, she chooses to work as a housekeeper in order to create a comfortable life for her child. Although, Alex had gone through a variety of issues throughout her stay in the shelter as well so not all things were going great for her. Plus things got even more heated when Maddy’s father tries to seek custody of her, where things get much more complex.
Maid takes you on a trip through a flawed legal and governance system, a young mother striving to make ends meet who inspires whilst some of us could relate to.
You can watch the Maid series about the struggles of a single mother now on Netflix.
