Jollibee Foods Corporation, a fast food restaurant from the Philippines, has returned to the Malaysian market with the launch of its first location in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, in December. Jollibee had already launched a location in Malaysia in the 1990s, but it was forced to close owing to the 1997 financial crisis.

Following the overwhelming response at the Kota Kinabalu branch, it is reported that the fast-food joint has plans to open 100 outlets throughout Malaysia within the coming 10 years. There will be around 50 branches in Sabah and Sarawak while the rest will be throughout Peninsular Malaysia.

The aim to expand the number of branches in Malaysia is also part of the company’s attempts to be named as one of the world’s top five fast-food joints. Currently, Jollibee is placed 11th on the list.

This renowned Filipino fast-food restaurant is well-known for its menu of American-inspired dishes as well as casual Filipino fare.

Jollibee fans love their juicy traditional fried chicken, the Yumburger, their house hamburger that has been a favourite of Jollibee consumers since the beginning, and Jolly Spaghetti, a distinctive sweet Filipino-style spaghetti (dubbed “the meatiest, cheesiest spaghetti”!).

As a half-Filipino, I can recall how all of these dishes tasted when I was in my motherland and it was the BOMB!

But to cater to the local crowd, the Jollibee outlets in Malaysia would be Halal-certified.
