What should you do if you’re having difficulties sleeping because of a sinus infection?

by Grace Sundram

There’s nothing worse than settling down for a good night’s sleep only to be kept awake all night by a stuffy nose. Those who suffer from sinusitis might know what we’re talking about. Well, that’s alright because we have a list of things that you can do to ensure you get a good night’s rest after this.

Drink some hot tea

5

It has been suggested that having a cup of tea before going to bed could help ease a stuffy nose. Since it is an antioxidant-rich drink, hot tea would help to reduce mucus clots that obstruct the airways allowing you to breathe through your nose.

Take a hot shower

3

Gather your energy to take a hot shower before heading to bed. This will cause your body temperature to drop, assisting your brain in falling asleep. The vapour from the hot water will also help to ease a stuffy nose by moistening the nasal passages and throat and loosening mucus.

Sinus flush

Rinsing your sinuses often would help remove mucus that is obstructing your breathing. Nasal rinses are simple to use and can be bought at any pharmacy near you. Rinsing your nostrils with a solution of distilled water and salt is preferable. Both can help keep the airways moist while clearing them.

But if you don’t feel comfortable with that method, you can always try a saline nasal spray. This tool can also help rinse your nose so you can breathe more easily.

Make the bedroom dark

6

All you have to do if you’re having difficulties sleeping is establish a healthy environment. When you keep your room dark at night, your brain produces the hormone melatonin, which aids with sleep.

If you still get light coming from the outside, you can try hanging dark curtains or wearing a sleeping mask to cover your eyes.

Cool the room

4

If you’re suffering from a stuffy nose, make sure to keep your room temperature low. As this would encourage your body temperature to also drop which eventually puts the brain in sleep mode.

Elevate your head while sleeping

8

When you are sick, sleep with your head raised with an extra pillow or sofa cushion. Sleeping in this condition helps relieve sinus pressure and makes it easier for you to breathe.

Take cough and cold medicine

7

Taking over-the-counter cold medicines will help relieve those symptoms so you can sleep well.

Calm your mind

Even when you feel tired and unwell, sometimes you will also have additional mental burdens that prevent you from falling asleep easily. To overcome this, try ways such as meditation, writing a journal or diary, listening to soothing music or reading a favourite book.
