Anna of the North strikes an emotional chord regardless of continent, collaborator, or genre and her music has taken on an unexpected life of its own as it finds success in syncs. Few modern artists could appear at home working with Tyler, the Creator (Anna lent her vocals to two tracks on ‘Flower Boy’ alongside Steve Lacy, Frank Ocean, and Rex Orange County) and Rejjie Snow as they are duetting with HONNE or playing with Anderson Paak. All of this has led Anna to where she finds herself now; a pop star and a fearless young woman who is set to make 2021 her year.
The singer returns with the new single ‘Here’s To Another’, which arrives alongside a cinematic video and introduces a new album slated for release later this year.
Serving as an unintentional ode to 2020, ‘Here’s To Another’ is an anthem for reflecting on and letting go of all the negative in the past year. The nostalgic-sounding, melancholic but happy record sets the tone for a new era of Anna of the North. Using a steady yet euphoric beat, paired with lyrics that fit the unified thought of “here’s to another year,” the Oslo based artist is building her own colourful world of pop music and inviting us on the ride. The visual arts is a fairytale story of sorts where Anna is ‘saved’ from the burdens in her life by a very furry & cute creature and together, they venture off into different portals of the past (as Anna explains…).
“Here’s To Another’ is one of my favourite songs that I’ve ever written. It’s very honest and the story of my life. It wasn’t intentional, but I think a lot of people can connect with the lyrics at the moment as we just put quite a strange and challenging year behind us. I can’t believe a whole year has passed, living in these absurd pandemic times. I’ve probably worn the same 5 outfits for a year now, I don’t shower every day anymore and I can’t remember the last time I put on makeup. And the worst thing is that I don’t really mind it all. So I’ve probably gone mad.”
This past summer, Anna of the North won a Norwegian Grammy (Spellemannprisen), had a track synced to a global iPad Pro Commercial (+ 2 Netflix shows), ‘opened’ for Katy Perry, and performed at the first-ever Zoomtopia – an eventful 2020, despite the circumstances.
Anna also recently released her ‘Believe’ EP (after Cher’s very own) to follow the much-loved second album ‘Dream Girl’ – the title track of which recently featured in the third film in the ‘To All The Boys…Always & Forever’ trilogy. She’s the only artist to feature in all three films and had a viral moment when the track was featured in a global iPad Pro Commercial.
With 400M+ streams under her belt, co-signs from Tyler The Creator, Dua Lipa, Alina Baraz, Rejjie Snow, Steve Lazy and more, Anna of the North is the pop star who has been hiding in plain sight. Her music strikes an emotional chord regardless of continent, collaborator, or genre and her music has taken on an unexpected life of its own throughout her career to date.
