Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has agreed to a nationwide state of emergency to contain COVID-19.
In a statement this morning, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong said that this is a proactive measure to help control the spread of the number of COVID-19 cases in the country. Since last December, numbers have skyrocketed with over 2,000 newly-confirmed daily Covid-19 cases for seven weeks straight.
After a meeting with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Monday (Jan 11), the decision has been made and the order will be in effect until August 1.
The Comptroller of the Royal Household of Istana Negara Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin has made a statement for the people to remain calm and to face this state of emergency with a strong and positive mindset.
The order could be lifted earlier in case the number of COVID-19 cases is reduced.
However, there has been no official statement on when the emergency will take place.
This decision was made right after the Prime Minister has addressed the nation on the new Movement Control Order measures.
As for the state of emergency, the official announcement will be made by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at 11 am today (Jan 12) to provide further details.
Stay tuned for more updates.
