Japanese technology protect babies from the dangers of dengue

by Grace Sundram

Utilising a patented Japanese technology, MamyPoko unveils the world’s first anti-mosquito diaper — MamyPoko Extra Dry Protect. As the diaper brand aims to provide the utmost comfort for babies, its latest innovation will be able to help parents protect their little ones from the dangers of dengue.

Though dengue is still very much prevalent amidst the global pandemic, the MamyPoko Extra Dry Protect diaper works in a way where it captures lemongrass extract in microcapsules. The natural repellant remains embedded on the diaper straps and only activates when it is rubbed or scratched. It releases a pleasant scent that repels mosquitoes and in terms of safety, the extract is alcohol-free and DEET-free.

During the launch of the innovation, Senior Lecturer, Department of Medical Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, University Malaya Dr Nurhafiza binti Zainal and Associate Prof. Dr. Gan Chin Seng, Head of Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, University of Malaya Medical Centre alongside Unicharm Malaysia’s marketing director, Makoto Anezaki were all present to discuss the dangers of dengue and the importance of taking necessary precautions in dengue prevention.

“The dengue virus is especially dangerous as there are four different strains and we only develop immunity to each strain after recovering from it. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure and we should do all that we can to protect our young ones,” said Dr. Nurhafiza.

Whereas Prof. Dr. Gan explained how there were 30,000 paediatric cases of dengue just last year.

As we have yet to discover a cure or effective vaccine for dengue, we can only do our best in protecting our children and babies through acts of prevention,” he shared.
