If you are a Canon user that’s trying to find the right camera for vlogging, then you should consider the new PowerShot G7 X Mark III. Integrating the two most important features that all vloggers are looking out for, this high-end compact camera that was launched not later than mid-2019 comes with an external mic jack as well as YouTube live-streaming capabilities.
Design 4/5
This is an easy-to-handle camera that features a three-inch 180° swivelling LCD touch screen, a microphone and four physical control dials around the body. It also comes with a 4.2x optical lens and built-in optical image stabilization. Unlike the previous model, it comes with a sculpted grip — small but a very useful bulge that can be very handy.
On the upper right side of the camera, there’s a two-tiered dial with the exposure modes at the top and exposure compensations below. Unfortunately, it still doesn’t have a built-in viewfinder.
Features 4/5
A camera that is suitable for vlogging, the G7 X Mark III captures uncropped 4K videos in stunning details making it perfect for Instagram stories as well. Even from the footage, users can easily make frame grabs that come in 8 megapixels JPEG.
With a built-in gyro, users can now capture content vertically at 30 fps (raw burst mode – one-shot AF) as well. Similar to its predecessors, it shares the same 20.1 megapixels, 1.0 inch stacked CMOS sensor coupled with the DIGIC 8 image processor.
For users who are always live streaming can put this camera in their must-have gadget list as it can stream videos that are shot instantaneously to YouTube through its Live Streaming function. Besides that, this camera may be targeting the vloggers however it is still usable for most kinds of camera users, especially for beginners.
But one thing that may be a led down for videographers is that the camera lacks a hotshoe. They have perfected the camera with a port for external microphones but without a hotshoe, it’s just pointless.
Performance 3.5/5
When it comes to low light shooting, the G7 X Mark III is pretty amazing as it comes with lower noise in shadows or dim conditions, thanks to the one-inch CMOS sensor. It also retains its tonal details making it a fantastic camera for still shooters too. However, one thing I found out is that the camera’s focusing system doesn’t seem to be as strong as it is on paper. The tracking system doesn’t keep up with subjects as expected especially when the subject is moving. This may lead to a contradiction as it is widely marketed as a vlogging camera.
Nevertheless, without a doubt, the standard of the image and video quality is still there, making it one of the reasons why camera enthusiasts keep coming back to Canon.
Value 4/5
The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III is now available at all stores nationwide and is priced at RM 2,999.00.
Conclusion
Although it may not be the “best” vlogging camera out there, I still believe with the standard that Canon has provided, it is one camera that may be worth the purchase. Not forgetting, users can also now charge the camera via USB cable. Also, when it comes to transferring photos and videos, users can just download the Canon Camera Connect app to do so.
Honestly speaking, I personally would purchase one myself. For its price, this compact camera comes with plenty of improvements compared to the previous model. But if you already have the previous Mark II and you’re mainly using it for still shooting, I would reckon to skip the upgrade.
