With phase four of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in action, the country has been further extended by another two weeks, until 12 May. While we have been advised to remain at home during the entire period of the MCO, thoughts may wonder in our mind – “Do I have enough food to last till then?”, “What am I cooking tomorrow?” or maybe even “Are my medical supplies sufficient for the next two weeks?”
When push comes to shove, we will eventually have to drive out at some point for one reason or another. Whatever the case, it is important to keep in mind what exactly you need to do before heading out. But please bear in mind that only one representative in a family is allowed to go out during the MCO. That said, PROTON has come up with some advice and precautions for you to practice.
‘Suit-up’ before leaving home
The most important thing to do is to protect ourselves when we venture outside, as it is our responsibility to ensure we don’t get sick and don’t infect others. So, don’t forget to wear a mask, bring a small bottle of hand sanitiser and at least a packet of wet tissue. If you touch lift buttons or any other object or surfaces, it’s advisable to immediately sanitise your hands before entering your car or touching anything else.
In cases of emergencies
Another extra precaution you can take is a simple rule of thumb – to let someone know in case there is an emergency. If you need to leave the house, be sure to inform where you’re headed to, how you plan to get there, and how to get in contact with you. Don’t forget to bring your mobile phone and make sure it is sufficiently charged.
Use a familiar route
With the country moving into the fourth phase of the MCO, the police and armed forces have strengthened the enforcement to ensure that people fully comply with the stay-at-home order. With roadblocks along key roads across the country, it is best that we know the route well to keep our journeys within a 10km travel radius. However, if you are travelling for health services, you are allowed to travel more than 10km.
Adhere to MCO time restrictions
As we are all aware, all businesses, such as restaurants, supermarkets and even food delivery services can only operate from 8 am to 8 pm. The public is also prohibited from carrying passengers in their vehicles except during emergencies, from 10 pm to 6 pm for all vehicles, including those used for e-hailing. For that reason, ensure that your journey is completed within the permitted timeframe set by the government.
Prove your identity
It is an offence in Malaysia if you don’t carry your identity card (IC) with you at all times. It is even more important now, especially during this current situation. So be sure to bring along your IC and if you are driving, please remember to bring along your driving license too – yes, driving without your license is a serious offence! In the event, if your current address isn’t reflected in these, bring a recent billing statement as well.
Plan your list
This is important to reduce the possibility of potential exposure to the virus. You’ll want to find your essential items quickly to help minimise the time you spend wandering the aisles at the supermarket so ensure your shopping is done fast and that you don’t need to go on multiple trips (if you forget something). First, check your pantry and fridge for food that you currently have, or those that have expired, and create a list that will replenish your inventory. This will avoid overstocking. You can also sort the list by category, such as meat, vegetable, canned food, dairy etc., so shopping is made easier. Remember to bring along a recyclable bag! After grocery shopping, place the groceries into the car and sanitise your hands.
Maintain hygiene – sanitise and disinfect
The tendency of touching your face is highly likely, especially if you wear glasses but try not to touch your face. Immediately sanitise and disinfect when you get home. Upon returning home, dispose your mask, wash your clothes in the washing machine and wash your hands with water and soap before taking a shower. Disinfect your groceries, the plastic bags, and the shopping bags, as well as your car keys and mobile phone. The goal here is to ensure zero chance of exposure in your house.
As we face an extended MCO period, PROTON and us hope that everyone practices good hygiene and most importantly, to stay at home. However, should you be required to leave home, please take note of these tips and drive safely! In these trying times, we have to stay safe and strong, Malaysia.
