His Passion For Body Art, In Turn, Made Him A Brilliant Tattoo Artist

by Natasha Christopher

Although Marcus Cheaw first opened up his first tattoo parlour named Black Daruma for 15 months and running, many of his new or regular customers can’t get enough of his creative, brilliant design and is able to deliver to what his clients want is what’s making people coming back to him for more. However, his creativeness in his tattoo journey, in the beginning, was not a smooth sailing ride. He had to learn and persevere to be the great tattoo artist that he is now.

When did you start tattooing and what was the main force behind the choice?

Body art has always been my passion since young and because of that, I decided to make it my life-long career. My journey in the tattoo and piercing field started more than 12 years ago when I first joined Dragonfly as an apprentice. Of course, it wasn’t easy as I wasn’t born with excellent drawing skills nor it can be improved overnight. Fortunately, with years of practice and my decade of tenure with them, I was exposed to various opportunities to create different styles of tattoos as well as bring to life amazing body art concepts.

What’s the significance behind the name Black Daruma?

Daruma is actually a Japanese wishing doll which often comes with no eyes. Once the owner makes a wish, the left eye will be painted while the other will only be filled when the wish come true. Another significant meaning of the doll is never giving up on your dreams. Due to its round figure, it is known for its ability to return to their original position when pushed. Hence, it symbolizes the ability to overcome any difficulty and to recover from any obstacles.

The reason behind this name is to have the spirit of never give up and to get up no matter how many times you fall. Black is just merely because it is my favourite colour and it matches a tattoo studio too.

Who or what are your biggest influences when it comes to your tattoos?

I would say my biggest source of inspiration comes from my family. My wife’s continuous support is what motivates to go further and be even better than what I am today. There is also various tattoo artist out there that are too many to mention whose work never fails to amaze me.

What are some of the strangest tattoo request you’ve ever had?

It would have to be a tattoo on private parts and profanity wordings.

What are your favourite subjects to tattoo and how you approach designing a custom piece?

Amongst the many tattoo style which I’ve mastered, oriental black and grey tattoos remained my forte. When it comes to designing a custom piece for a client, their preference is and always will be my priority. I will always prefer a pre-tattoo consultation, to first hear their ideas or concept and then give them feedback or suggestion based on my professionalism. Then turn their ‘wants’ into reality.
