A pimple is everyone’s worst nightmare. It lurks on you when you least expect it and the most horrible part about is it plays peek-a-boo on you the day before you’re attending a cool event. Like why of all the days it decide to appear before we’re all planning to spruce ourselves up and just feeling good? (Such a major joy killer, am I right?)
To those who relate to what I just said earlier, welcome to the club. Having zits on your face is one thing and having it developed into massive scars that won’t go off for a long time is another headache. In my experience, the scars on my face really did bruise my self-esteem and insecurity for a very long time. I would say it still affects me till today.
There was a time where I was recovering from a terrible hangover and the need to put an effort to look good to work is definitely off the table. All I wanted to do at that point was just to sleep, and eat something. Then, an old uncle approached me and took a good look at my face and ask me with a disgusted look on his face “is that pimple scars?” I replied hesitantly with a yes. That experience alone made me felt so negative about myself and just ruined my whole mood for the week.
It’s been an uphill battle for me to constantly take good care of my skin, experimenting with different products, applying makeup to my face to cover traces of “impurities” and just fighting for this scars to go away. For many years, sometimes it helps and at times the past relapse to haunt me back of my insecurities.
Instead of just hiding behind tons of makeup to hide my scars and the time I’ve invested just covering my face off, one day I just had an epiphany of just not conforming to the societal stereotype of what is beautiful. Human beings are not perfect, so why should my face be? Of course, it’s never wrong to put on a little bit of a powder and makeup on your skin to help you with your confidence but if it becomes your go-to source of defining your beauty then that’s a different story altogether. Pimple scars will go away as time goes by if you take good care of your skin but in the meantime, I would always tell people to embrace your skin. Yes, you may need to be open to the critics like how I did with the old uncle but it made me stronger in person. Here’s a set of reasons why you should go free and naked with your face;
- You look realistic
I bet most of you have seen a person you’ve been stalking on Instagram in real life and come to a realisation that the person you’ve been stalking is only pretty with makeup. There’s also another joke that’s been going all over the internet; “Don’t edit your pics. If you go missing and your Facebook pics look like Beyonce and you look like Chewbacca, you’re screwed.”
- You will learn to love your flaws
As humans, we naturally gravitate towards a smooth skin and it’s not a bad thing to dream of that but there’s no point of being ashamed of flaws in your skin because as time goes by, it’ll soon fade off. Similarly to the scars in your face, you’ll love the scars at other parts in your body when we have learned to love ourselves.
- You’ll feel more confident!
When you’re comfortable in your own skin without the thick layers of make-up then you’ll have a sense of appreciation for yourself. Just like me, I’m coming around of accepting my beautiful self regardless of its flaws. I believe I am not defined by my flaws and at the end of the day, it’s the personality that always matters. Besides, Tyra Banks even took her makeup off on a live TV show and yet she looks beautiful as ever.
- Healthier skin always!
As most of us know, makeup has toxic ingredients that if applied regularly, it may cause harm to our skin that most of us may not expect it. For instance, popular cosmetics ingredients such as sodium benzoate, propylene glycol and a number of other acids (not to mention parabens and carcinogens) cause allergic reactions on most skin types. It’s always advisable to remove it with a makeup remover and rinse it off with a face wash.
- You’ll have more money
There is no doubt that makeup nowadays are not the most budget-friendly thing you can have. Sometimes, you’ll be spending half of your allowance even when you can put the money to a better use of other things. Depending on your makeup habits, sometimes it’s great to just indulge in the things that you really need and not just for the sake of looking cool.
P.S. most man nowadays prefers girls with no makeup on. What do you think?
