Best Memes of 2017

by Natasha Christopher

There is no doubt that memes over the years have made all of us laugh and probably break a few awkward silence over a Mamak session. Every year, the memes just get more creative and hilarious. For 2017, there were a plenty of viral memes that has us rolling on the floor and even thinking about how true the memes are in some parts of our lives (especially about how broke we are!)

So let’s break down the famous viral memes of 2017!

1.Salt Bae
Saltbae
Salt Bae is a nickname given to Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe, who was widely discussed on social media following the circulation of a video in which he flamboyantly sprinkles salt over his forearm on a carved steak. On January 7th,2017, Gökçe uploaded a video of him doing his magic to the steak and next day it garnered over 2.4 million views. The world was so intrigued by this man until stars like Leonardo Dicaprio had to see the famous Salt Bae in action for himself. A viral meme with a picture of Gokce sprinkling salt has been used to describe instances of embellishing something that does not need it, adding fuel to the fire, or anything else the Internet can think of.

2.Meryl Streep Yelling
meryl streep
This iconic image of Meryl Streep yelling dates from 2015. Meryl Streep attended the Screen Actors Guild Awards because Meryl Streep attends all the awards. At those awards, the late, great Debbie Reynolds was presented with the SAG’s Lifetime Achievement Award by her daughter Carrie Fisher. No one was more supportive than Meryl. Twitter users took the image and made it famous this year and it’s one of the most searched memes. Whatever Streep was originally yelling, almost any song lyric, it turns out, can be added to the photo to create a rocking good time.

3. IT Clown
IT clown

The remake IT movie officially shattered the box office movie records with a staggering $123.1 million since it aired worldwide in September. In the movie, Pennywise, the killer clown lures innocent children into the sewers is mainly the trademark of that show. However, many can’t shake the idea to change a killer clown into a hilarious meme (of course, knowing the internet-verse!) The meme asks this question: How might Pennywise be able to entice you to crawl to your doom in the sewers? The pictures are taken from a previous film adaptation of the story, but the sight of Pennywise is no less strangely hilarious for it.

4. Distracted Boyfriend

The source image is a stock photograph taken by photographer Antonion Guillem, which was posted on the stock photo database iStock under the description “Disloyal man with his girlfriend looking at another girl”. Also known as Man Looking at Other Woman, is a captioned stock photo series in which a man looks at the backside of a woman walking by while another woman, presumably his romantic partner, looks on disapprovingly. The memes from this famous picture normally feature a certain responsibility a person can’t handle.

5. Roll Safe
roll safe
Everyone has probably come across this thinking man in your social media feed at least once a day. Roll Safe is an image featuring a screenshot of actor Kayode Ewumi grinning and pointing to his temple while portraying the character Reece Simpson (a.k.a. “Roll Safe”) in the web series Hood Documentary. The image is often captioned with various jokes mocking poor decision making and failures in critical thinking. Within eight months, the video gained over 1.04 million views and 1,300 comments.
