In the mafia movies of old, you can probably remember a certain line whereby a poor victim is sent to sleep with the fishes, well in the Hurawalhi’s 5.8 Undersea Restaurant, located in the Maldives, you can now eat with the fishes.
This underwater extravaganza opened in late 2016, whereby it has since been known to be the world’s largest underwater restaurant to be built, and its name is derived from how far underwater it is located which is 5.8 meters below the surface. It is over 400 tonnes and spans over 90 square meters. In order to access the restaurant, diners have to walk across the pier and step down a long winding staircase to the restaurant
The wild array of fishes and sea creatures are attracted with an artificial reef built around the restaurant, which has led to many different fishes and sea life. The food is no pushover either, as it is created by chef Bjoern van den Oever who often has to compete by making his dishes as exciting as the view, which is always a challenge.
Located in the Maldives’ Lhaviyani Atoll, this five-star luxury resort was designed by Japanese architect Yuji Yamazaki, of YYA New York, and is owned by Crown & Champa Resorts.
