Tuning Into the Spirit of Christmas

by Natasha Christopher

Its the end of another year, and with it comes to the joys of Christmas, so here are some classics to get you back into the holiday mood.

There is no doubt the wonders that Christmas brings to a person. Whether its Jingle Bells or a simple Michael Buble song, once it starts to hit you, the best next thing to do would be to get that Christmas spirit on. The one thing that gets me in the mood for Christmas would be the Christmas movies! It gets you going, lifts your jolly spirits up and makes you want to throw yourself in the snow to make a snow angel (of course, in Malaysia is a different story altogether). Below are some of my favourite Christmas movies that we would love to suggest you watch!

1.Dr Seuss How The Grinch Stole Christmas

Ahhh, what’s not to love about the funny old man who lives on the outskirts of Whoville, who plans on ruining the Christmas holiday for all of the citizens of the town? Reluctantly joined by his hapless dog, Max, the Grinch comes down from his mountaintop home and sneaks into town to swipe everything holiday-related from the Whos. However, the bitter grump finds a hitch in his plans when he encounters the endearing Cindy Lou Who. Slowly, he starts getting the magic of Christmas in his stubborn soul.

2.Elf

This 2003 movie starring Will Ferrell centres around his character, Buddy, who was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and raised to adulthood among Santa’s elves. Unable to shake the feeling that he doesn’t fit in, the adult Buddy travels to New York, in full elf uniform, in search of his real father. As it happens, this is Walter Hobbs, a cynical businessman. After a DNA test proves this, Walter reluctantly attempts to start a relationship with the childlike Buddy with increasingly chaotic results.

3.Arthur Christmas

Everyone knows that each Christmas, Santa Claus delivers presents to every last child on Earth. What everyone doesn’t know is that Santa accomplishes the feat with a very high-tech operation beneath the North Pole. But when the unthinkable happens, and Santa misses one child out of hundreds of millions, someone has to save the day. It’s up to Arthur, Santa’s youngest son, to deliver a present to the forgotten tyke before Christmas morning dawns. Truly a must watch animation Christmas movie!

4.Almost Christmas

This drama and comedy movies centres around Walter Meyer, who is a retired mechanic who lost the love of his life one year earlier. Now that the holiday season is here, he invites daughters Rachel and Cheryl and sons Christian and Evan to his house for a traditional celebration. Poor Walter soon realizes that if his bickering children and the rest of the family can spend five days together under the same roof, it will truly be a Christmas miracle. Let’s just say this movie makes you realize coming back home for the holidays with your family is the best thing ever.

5. The Holiday

Two women, one from America and one from Britain, swap homes at Christmas time after bad breakups with their boyfriends. Each woman finds romance with a local man from their holidays but realizes that the imminent return home may end the relationship. This star-studded romantic comedy movie features Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, and Jack Black. The film was written specifically for the main cast in mindso the writers played to the actors and actresses strengths in the script.

6. Home Alone

Who can forget the epic shocked looking face by McCaulay Culkin that shot him to stardom after starring in this Christmas, family-fun movie?  When bratty 8-year-old Kevin McCallister acts out the night before a family trip to Paris, his mother makes him sleep in the attic. After the McCallisters mistakenly leave for the airport without Kevin, he awakens to an empty house and assumes his wish to have no family has come true. But his excitement sours when he realizes that two con men plan to rob the McCallister residence and that he alone must protect the family home. Definitely, a great movie for everyone to watch this holiday!

With that being said, here at 2CENTS, we would like to wish you a Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!
