Carousell, one of the world’s largest and fastest growing mobile classifieds marketplace, joins forces with Johor-based young entrepreneur associations Indienomics and StartUp Johor to launch a community engagement programme to help Johoreans sell better online as the platform celebrates its 100 millionth listing globally.
“Carousell is proud to partner with Indienomics and StartUp Johor to support Johoreans by providing them with workshops and activities to grow their online presence,” said Lucas Ngoo, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Carousell. “Their mission to encourage and support Johor entrepreneurs aligns with the efforts and educational initiatives that Carousell is committed to supporting. We are excited to work with them and participate in the educational activations for Johoreans to leverage on Malaysia’s e-commerce growth.”
Launched in 2014, Startup Johor is a community founded by Feng to educate, inspire, and connect entrepreneurs around Johor with fellow startups, industrial representatives and investors to network and share the lessons learned along the road of entrepreneurship. It’s currently working closely with local government related agencies to build the startup community for Johorean entrepreneurs.
“We have a strong youth and lifestyle audience in Johor. Out of the 1 million listings here in the city, 80% are from the fashion and lifestyle categories. We level the playing field for individuals and entrepreneurs, making it much easier for them to extend their customer base. With 70% broadband internet penetration throughout Malaysia, the ecommerce market can only grow as it becomes to be connected to the Internet. We see huge potential in Johor and we are taking concrete steps to deepen our presence here.” added Lucas.
Top Johor Carouseller, Khairul Adzwan Khairullah, was also present to share his experience. Together with his wife, Nurhidayah Abdul Bakar, Khairul owns and manages homegrown label krlbrands, founded in 2008.
They began with making home decor items with upcycled materials and have since expanded into baby accessories, clothing and building affordable homes. Since joining the Carousell community, they have seen an increase in the customer base beyond Johor.
To inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs like Khairul, Carousell together with Indienomics and Startup Johor, will conduct monthly community events to engage young entrepreneurs, such as workshops on selling online and sharing sessions by successful Carousellers.
