Dark Beauty Says F*ck No to Bleaching Her Skin – and We Agree!

by Nashata K.

Fashion is all-pervasive and though becoming more inclusive, the industry still has a long way to go. Just ask 24 year old Sudanese model Nyakim Gatwech – she’ll tell you all about it. Nicknamed “Queen of the Dark”, this moonshine dark-skinned woman is a sensation on Instagram and uses the platform to address issues in our society such as racism and colourism.

Her empowering photos on Instagram inspire many around the world about deeply-pigmented skin. With 149K followers on the social media platform, the model also sends out inspirational messages to women who are especially struggling to be comfortable in their own skin.

When you look into your reflection through the mirror, what do you see? I hope you see nothing but how beautiful, smart, intelligent, outstanding, unique you are.

Earlier this year, Nyakim was confronted by an Uber driver about her skin colour. In one of her Instagram posts, she shared how the driver asked her if she’d ever consider bleaching her skin.  “I was (asked by) my Uber driver the other day, he said, ‘Don’t take this offensive but if you were given 10 thousand dollars would you bleach your skin for that amount?’”, she wrote.

SOUTH SUDAN🇸🇸🇸🇸 A country with people so dark you won't believe your eyes.. skin so rich and teeth so bright. Gosh how I love my country my people and everything that come with it.. I was ask my uber driver the other day he said, don't take this offensive but if you were given 10 thousand dollars 💵 would you bleach your skin for that amount? I couldn't even respond I started laughing so hard. Than he said so that a no and I was like hell to the f*king yeah that a no, why on earth would I ever bleach this beautiful melanin God bless with me. Than he said so you look at it as a blessing? I just 🤦‍♂️ you won't believe the kind of questions I get and the kind of looks I get for having this skin. The dark beauty just laughed it off. She said, “I couldn’t even respond I started laughing so hard. (Then) he said, ‘So that a no’ and I was like hell to the f*king yeah [that’s] no. Why on earth would I ever bleach this beautiful melanin God [blessed] me with. (Then) he said so you look at it as a blessing? You won’t believe the kind of questions I get and the kind of looks I get for having this skin.”

She also seems to get many questions coming her way like why is she the colour that she is. Her responses are often refreshing and shows she is firm with her beliefs and will not easily be deterred by what others think.

They say to me: Nyakim, are you really that black? And I answer: What on earth is “that black”? Black is black in whatever remarkable shade.

Nyakim continues to inspire many with her quotes and self-confidence, and is smashing stereotypes about dark-skinned individuals – and we wholeheartedly agree; whether you’re fair or dark or somewhere in between, be confident. You’re beautiful just the way you are.

Let’s hope the rest of the world catch up to the notion soon!
