Vivo V5s for Better Selfies

by Nashata K.

With the increasing selfie trend in recent years, we’re seeing more and more smartphone manufacturers launching ‘selfie-centric’ devises. Why ever not? After all, we’re all suckers for really amazing selfies.

Many sources have cited the Vivo V5 – the V5s’ older sibling, as “one of the best selfie smartphones in the market for 2016” because it was after all, the world’s first mobile with a 20MP shooter on the front.

Vivo has now debuted its V5s device with its previous trademark – the 20MP front camera. The smartphone is now available in the Malaysian market and comes in 3 finishes: Matte Black, Rose Gold and Gold for a retailing price of RM1299. Read on to find out our 2cents worth of this newly released devise.

Let us begin with its design. The Vivo V5s sports a metal body design with rounded edges. The smartphone feels premium to look at from both the rear and front sides. Vivo 5s comes in solid metal finish, which gives the phone a sturdier chassis, and it’s also pleasing to the eye. With its minimalistic and neat unibody design, the V5s feels light to the touch and comfortable to operate on one hand.

The fingerprint sensor is embedded in the home button on the front panel; on the rear is the camera module with flash and the Vivo logo embossed neatly in the top half of the panel.

With its 5.5-inch display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution with Gorilla Glass, you will find the display quite detailed and seamless. The screen brightness level is customisable and the content appears clear and crisp.

Not much of an incremental upgrade compared to the existing V5 range in terms of design but you’ll be happy to find out that the V5s bags a 64-bit octa-core MediaTek MT6750 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Selfies galore with plenty of space.

The V5s delivered a decent job in multitasking. Toggling between apps and watching YouTube videos was smooth as there were no glitches, lag, freezing, or clutter. Overall, the device renders an impressive user experience.

Switched on, we headed straight to check out its photo and video-taking capabilities. The V5s comes with a 13-megapixel rear camera (which can record 1080p videos) with Phase Detection Autofocus as well as a single soft light flash.

Here are some pictures taken using the rear camera.

Its unique selling point is its selfie camera with a ‘Moonlight glow’. The filters available – Beauty, HDR, and more – lets you capture your ideal selfie. If you’re not too eager about the over-the-top buffing feature of the Beauty Mode, you can choose the Take Photo mode and capture selfies in your own natural state.

The filters and modes available for the front camera also support the rear camera, including the Face Beauty mode so you get to enhance the portraits of others.

Another USP is its Group Selfie mode, which lets you take group shots in landscape mode. Perhaps bringing those come-lets-all-squeeze-into-one-shot days to an official end?

The battery on the V5s retains the same rating of 3,000 mAh with support for fast charging and other builds such as the 4G LTE support with dual-SIM cards, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.0, GPS, OTG support, microUSB 2.0 and a 3.5 mm audio jack also remain.

Our Verdict

If you’re a light to moderate mobile user, the Vivo V5s is a good devise to own as it offers satisfactory selfie camera performance and ample storage space to store all your selfies and videos.
