Deep Scan: Acer S 13 Review

by The Queen

Acer’s Aspire S 13 is the definition of a slim and powerful Ultrabook.

In this day of age, things need to be done, and they need to be done fast. To do that on the go, an Ultrabook is definitely one of the devices that you can use to be productive. An excellent example of a powerful Ultrabook is none other than Acer’s S 13.

DESIGN AND USAGE

With a thickness of 14.6mm, the S 13 is definitely among one of the thinner options. There are three USB 3.0 ports as well, one of them being a Type-C. The hinge feels sturdy, and overall, build quality is absolutely great.

In terms of usage, the S 13 is a breeze to use. It’s fast and responsive, thanks to the SSD and ample amount of RAM. Typing is also easy, because the keys are evenly spaced out, though the amount of travel could have been better. The only thing that could have been improved, is the directional keys – they should have been bigger!

As mentioned, we found the S 13 to be fast and responsive, so doing anything work-related with this Ultrabook is easy, unless you’re a graphics designer or need to use CAD programs. The Intel HD Graphics 520 is able to support graphics-intensive programs, though we’d recommend against using it as a main workhorse.

Thankfully, it does support casual games like Plant vs. Zombies, or Stardew Valley. At the end of the day, the S 13 is not a gaming notebook.

If you’re wondering about the display of the S 13, you don’t have to worry because the screen uses Acer’s ComfyView technology, and is an In-plane Switching (IPS) panel. What this means is that you’d be able to get a clear view of the screen, from a reasonably wide angle. Your co-workers won’t have to crowd around you when you need to show them something anymore! The screen is a Full HD screen, so things are pretty sharp as well.

Speaking of a Full HD screen, watching movies on the S 13 is a great experience, not only because of the clear and sharp screen, but also because of the long-lasting battery. During our time with this Ultrabook, its battery managed to last approximately 9.5 hours, which is very impressive. Of course, we had to reduce screen brightness to achieve this, but even at a reduced brightness level, the screen is clearly visible. Completing the package for this Ultrabook is an audio system that has been tuned by Dolby.

CONCLUSION
Priced at RM3,399, the mid-range Acer Aspire S 13 is definitely one of the top options for an Ultrabook in this price range.
We’re really happy with the battery life and overall build quality as well, making it easy for us to recommend this Ultrabook to any working executive looking for a simple, functional and great-looking device to keep them productive while on the go.
