Mila Kunis fans, brace yourselves: your favourite rom-com leading woman is on to something new and different!
The film is based on Jessica Knoll’s best-selling novel of the same name, for which she also wrote the script. It follows Ani FaNelli, a sharp-tongued New Yorker who has it all: a sought-after position at a glossy magazine, a killer wardrobe, and a dream Nantucket wedding on the horizon. Ani is forced to confront a terrible secret that threatens to ruin her neatly built existence.
This happens when she meets a true-crime documentary director who wants to hear her side of a troubling incident that occurred while she was a teenager at the prestigious Bradley School. Her seemingly perfect life is thrown into turmoil as she is forced to revisit a tragic event and unearth secrets from her past.
Based on the synopsis provided, this adaptation appears to be your favourite magazine editor movie (hello, 13 Going on 30) meets nonfiction investigative journalism (looking at you, Serial).
Mike Barker (The Sandman, Hit & Run, The Handmaid’s Tale) is directing the film adaptation, which he also executive produces with Knoll, Lisa Sterbakov, Shayne Fiske Goldner, and Steve Hutensky. With Bruna Papandrea, Jeanne Snow, Erik Feig, and Lucy Kitada, Kunis also acts as a producer.
Prior to its release in 2015, Feig and Papandrea bought Knolls’ original novel for adaptation. Luckiest Girl Alive has sold over a million copies globally since its debut the following year. The first trailer for the new film was released on February 3 as part of a Netflix 2022 movie preview.
Kunis only appears in a short clip around 1:50, but it’s nice to have a preview of the film — and to know that it’s finally coming soon. And, as the film is expected to be released shortly, a complete trailer will be available as well.
Mila Kunis stars as Ani, alongside a stacked cast including Finn Wittrock, Chiara Aurelia, Scoot McNairy, Thomas Barbusca, Justine Lupe, Dalmar Abuzeid, Alex Barone, Carson MacCormac, Jennifer Beals and Connie Britton.
