Samsung Reveals New Modular TV’s

by Nicolas See Tho

Another big reveal at CES 2018 this year, as Samsung had unveiled a giant 146-inch modular TV called the Wall at the Las Vegas tech show.

As you can see above, the TV is massive, and it features a micro-LED display which is supposed to be the superior alternative to OLED with deeper blacks and brighter highlights. The downside here is that this technology would be very expensive to manufacture. Samsung has also stated that their modular TVs can be ordered with customised sizes. The modular effect is made possible as the display unit itself is composed of many smaller modules which can be arranged to form weird dimensions.

One of the cool aspects of a micro-LED display is that it has no need for a backlight to brighten the picture, as it uses self-emitting LEDs to help illuminate visuals. Backlights usually make it hard for the screen to produce deep blacks due to how there are illumination spills beyond the targeted pixels. Each unit could have easily millions of LEDs being layered to produce this effect.

Samsung has yet to reveal the pricing of this new display unit.
