Our aim is for customers to leave the cafe with nostalgic feelings of good old childhood memories and delicious, homey food,” – Sebastian Delnatte, owner of 123 Gasing Cafe
Situated right in the heart of Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya, 123 Gasing Cafe has been welcoming customers since it first opened its doors on 1 June 2015. The cafe is a suitable place for friends to come together, choose a cozy corner and just enjoy a quiet conversation over cakes and coffee. Alternatively, you can also take lots of good, Instagram-worthy photos at the cafe, as 123 Gasing is rumoured to be one of Petaling Jaya’s most Intagram-esque cafes.
Owner, Sebastian Delnatte wishes to establish a retro dining experience for the customers, hence we could see the visible implementation of antique furniture in the cafe. The comfortable wooden chairs and tables, as well as classic handmade decorations, mould a setting that is both casual and charming and will certainly make you feel like home.
We were served with the Watermelon and Feta Cheese Salad (RM19) for starters. The combination sounds really bizarre, but 123 Gasing café managed to capture the great versatility of a salad – and made it so good! Chopped watermelon and Japanese cucumber mixed with feta cheese, pine nuts and fresh basil present a really refreshing taste that opened up our appetite for the next dish.
As meat lovers, we immediately fell in love with 123’s signature Lamb Shank (RM35). Slow-cooked to perfection, with meat so tender that it falls effortlessly of the bone the moment you pick it up. The dish is topped with homemade brown sauce, freshly chopped capsicum and garnished with a rosemary herb for that tantalising, aroma.
The next dish is Pesto Pasta (RM25), a dish that comes with a choice of either spaghetti or penne. The pasta is then cooked with cherry tomato, green zucchini, capsicum, eggplant, and homemade pesto sauce. This fairly simple dish is certainly a comforting meal, perfect for vegetarians and those who just love to eat.
We took one sniff at the 123 Beef Burger (RM30) and found our mouths watering in a second! The basic version is homemade beef patty paired with Swiss cheese, served with a side of fries. You can add on ingredients like fried egg, turkey ham, mushroom and beef bacon, which are subjected to different pricing. Within one bite, the juiciness of the beef patty overflows your mouth and creates a harmony with other ingredients. Burger lovers will definitely come back for this bad boy.
We also had the opportunity to try three different desserts at 123 Gasing Café. The infamous Chocolate Monster (RM12) screams absolute yes for us. A moist chocolate cake layered with more thick chocolate cream, this mess of chocolatey goodness definitely deserves a record, in our book at least. A fair warning though; it is truly for major chocolate lovers out there!
You’re wrong if you think the Bread and Butter Pudding (RM5) is anything but extraordinary. This all too well-known dessert has a very moist, creamy smooth texture and tastes just like Mum’s personal recipe. So warm and comforting, it is sure to be an instant favourite!
We suspect the Classic Cheesecake (RM12) could certainly open up the window to human souls, because from the first bite we could taste the rich, cheesy smooth texture of this dynamic cake. You just have to try this simple, fine piece of classic dessert yourselves to know what we’re talking about.
Overall, 123 Gasing Café does live up to the rumours as being one of the top must-visit restaurants to visit in Petaling Jaya. This vintage café will mesmerise and entice you to come inside to try their menu from the moment you reach the entrance. Highly noted as the perfect location for your Gram, Instagrammers and hipsters alike frequent the café, so you won’t feel out of place as you snap away. With great service, excellent food, and amazing decor, you’ll be sure to stick around for hours.
